Pulau Rawa

Pulau Rawa is a coral island in Mersing District, Johor. The name "Rawa" comes from the local term for white doves, which can be found easily in the island. It is also coined as "Maldives of Johor".

The island is relatively small. There are no proper roads, hence people often walk or cycle around the island. One side of the island is a beach while the other side has a rocky vertical cliff. The island’s beaches have fine, powdery white sand and is probably the best in all Malaysia.

The island is still unspoiled. There only two accommodation operators there. Thus, it has all the quality that a pristine island should have, the clear water, clean environment or inviting palm trees. Hammocks can be located around the beach area so that visitors can relax and enjoy the beautiful sight of the island.

The water surrounding the island is very clear and usually calm, making it  safe for water activities such as swimming, kayaking and snorkeling. Sea creatures such as fishes, squids, jellyfish and octopuses can be found here. It is also a home to an abundance of corals. The island is the only place in Malaysia where a Black Tip Reef Shark was spotted.

The land of Pulau Rawa is covered with lush tropical rain forest. Land Creatures like Malayan Sea Eagle, peacocks, fruit bats, barn owls, kingfishers, black and white doves and other reptiles can be found there. The visitors can enjoy Hilltop Walk and Island Walk as an alternative to relaxing on the beach.

Pulau Rawa is a protected marine sanctuary. Hence activities like fishing, littering, motorised water sport, removing any of its aquatic animals or plant are strictly prohibited.

Hear From Others

I was heading to Pulau Rawa with high expectations after reading so much about this little gem online. As we approached the island, all I could do was hats off - I will never forget the view that greeted me especially the huge RAWA engraving on the island.

The best takeaway from this trip to Rawa Island was the white sandy shore and emerald waters that made us embrace the beach bums that we are — we could stay on the beach and in the water for an entire afternoon and not get sick of it.

We had an amazing trip to Pulau Rawa, the so-called Maldives in Johor. We decided to treat ourselves a good trip after a long exhausted working life. Finally a small getaway from the hustle and bustle life in the city.
